Staff Spotlight: John Matthews, CPRS-S

Meet John Matthews, our dedicated Associate Director at Safe Harbor Peer Support Services. With more than 25 years of experience in the mental health and substance use fields, John’s leadership, insight, and compassion continue to be a driving force behind our mission to provide meaningful peer support and recovery services.

Recently, John reached a special milestone in his professional journey through his participation in the Ohio PRO Leadership Institute, a program designed to build strong peer leadership across Ohio. During this time, he had the unique opportunity to reconnect with one of his early mentors, Jeff McQueen, CEO of the Mental Health Association of Nassau County in New York.

Jeff’s guidance, support, and willingness to share his knowledge helped expand John’s leadership and deepen his impact in the field. As a heartfelt gesture of gratitude, John honored Jeff’s military service by presenting him with a handmade flag—crafted by a peer and personalized just for him. It was a meaningful tribute to a mentor whose impact continues to resonate.
