May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Together, We Can Break the Stigma

Each May, we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month; a time dedicated to raising awareness, fostering understanding, and reminding one another that no one has to face mental health challenges alone. At Safe Harbor Peer Support Services, this month holds deep meaning as we continue our mission to provide hope, connection, and support to those in need.

Mental health is an essential part of overall well-being, yet stigma and misunderstanding still prevent many individuals from seeking help. Too often, people feel they must struggle in silence. At Safe Harbor, we believe it doesn’t have to be that way. By creating safe, welcoming spaces and offering peer-led support, we empower individuals to share their experiences, find encouragement, and begin their journey toward healing.

Our peer support model is built on lived experience; meaning the people offering support have walked similar paths. This creates a unique environment of trust, compassion, and understanding. Whether someone is facing anxiety, depression, substance use challenges, or simply feeling overwhelmed, Safe Harbor is here to listen without judgment.

Throughout Mental Health Awareness Month, we encourage our community to take small but meaningful steps:

  • Check in on a friend, family member, or neighbor

  • Practice self-care and prioritize your own mental wellness

  • Speak openly about mental health to help normalize the conversation

  • Reach out for support when you need it

Breaking the stigma starts with conversation and connection. When we share our stories and support one another, we create a stronger, more compassionate community.

Safe Harbor offers a variety of groups, activities, and peer support services designed to meet people where they are. Whether you’re looking for connection, resources, or simply a place to belong, our doors are open.

This May, and every month, remember: you are not alone. Healing is possible, and support is here.

Join us in raising awareness, spreading hope, and breaking the stigma around mental health. Together, we can make a difference.
